2018 New Year – What are your career goals?

Written by Jonathan Burston

2018 has arrived, but firstly how was 2017?

  • Did you achieve everything you wanted to?
  • Did you follow through on the goals you set yourself at the start of the year?
  • Did you find the job of your dreams?
  • Did you get a new role within your existing organization?

Time to Reflect

At this time of year we often reflect on what has happened in the last 12 months.

  • What we’ve done?
  • What we’ve achieved?
  • What’s happened to us?
  • What we would have liked to achieve?

It’s natural. We all do it.

This period of reflection isn’t about dwelling on past experiences. It’s just about taking stock. It’s about recognising what’s happened and moving on. It’s about taking control. Taking control of ourselves, our careers to move forward in the right direction.

New Year. New Hopes

As we close the door on an old year, we open up a brand new one. One full of hopes.

A New Year is an opportunity for us to start again afresh. An opportunity to put in place goals that we want to achieve in the coming 12 months – whatever they may be.

Now is a good time to start to think about what you want from the coming year. What would you like to achieve?

Usually one of those thoughts and goals is thinking about your job and career.

New Year. My Best Year Ever

Here are a few questions to help guide you for making 2018 your year for building and developing your career. To make the New Year 2018 your best one ever.

  1. My career in 2018

What do I want for my career in 2018? – Be as descriptive as possible.

  1. Projecting forward

If I were to looking back on 2018 (a year from now), what would it look like?

  1. Looking for a new job?
  • What does that look like?
  • What will I be doing?
  • What type of organization will I be working for?
  1. Already in a role?
  • Am I happy with it?
  • What could I do to make it better?
  • Do I want to a promotion? If so, what do I need to do to get promoted?
  1. New challenge

If you’re I’m not happy or satisfied in my current role, what can I do to change it?

Is it time to move to another organization before I get stuck in a ‘rut’. Seth Godin calls it ‘The Dip’ (a book that I highly recommend)

  1. Personal development
  • What do I need to develop about myself to help memy career?
  • What can I become better at in 2018?

Take Action

Now you’ve created your list, think about what action you need to take. This is all about taking decisive and deliberate action in the next month to start 2018 with a bang.

If you do this, it will give you a head start on achieving your career goals in 2018.

Take control of your career. Take control of your destiny. It’s down to you to make the choices, to make the decisions. No one else but you.

Let’s make 2018 your best year ever.
